The Cinematheque of the Republic of North Macedonia

The Cinematheque began its work in 1976, as an institution of special interest for the Republic, with the task of collecting, processing, keeping, protecting and presenting films and film materials of special artistic, cultural, scientific, historical and other social significance. The Cinematheque is a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), the European Association of Cinematheques (ACE) and the "Europa Cinemas" association.

Within the facility of the institution, there is the movie theater with 136 seats, which offers a movie experience through the regular movie program that takes place every working day from Monday to Saturday. During the summer, screenings are also held in the summer cinema "Mirno Leto" which is located in the courtyard of the Cinematheque, but also in the closed cinema hall which is fully air-conditioned.

The Cinematheque of the Republic of North Macedonia is the host of several film festivals, also the organizer of a large number of film cycles dedicated to important film authors, directors and directors of photography, as well as presentations at a large number of national cinema festivals, premieres and promotions. Particular attention is paid to the presentation of Macedonian cinema, as well as European film production and classic "heritage" films and historical notebooks.

Within the premises of the Cinematheque there is the film archive, where films are collected, stored, restored, cataloged and processed, primarily from national production, which are part of the priceless cultural heritage of our country.

Despite to the national film fund (films recorded during the period of institutional cinematography, from 1947 to the present day), two film funds of exceptional international importance are kept in the Cinematheque: the film opus of the Manaki Brothers the first cameramen on the Balkans (the original nitrate negatives and all protective copies) and the documentary film "Macedonia" in pictures" (1923) by Arseniy Jovkov (original nitrate positive image and the protective copies).

In the lobby of the Cinematheque, visitors can see the Golden Lion award for the Venice Film Festival for the film BEFORE THE RAIN (1994).
